This is Adventism

Pisze Trent Martin

In the beginning, Adventism was a small group of young people who had a special message to share with the Christian churches around them. This message was focused and specialised. It included such teachings as the Sabbath and the Second Coming. Many of our church pioneers saw no need to share other parts of Jesus’ teaching, such as the gospel of grace- why duplicate the work of other churches, right? Yet it becomes apparent, with the benefit of hindsight, that a message that excludes the gospel as its central theme creates disciples who are Adventists without being Christians (Christ-followers).

Today, Adventism is faced with the same challenge as in our genesis. The question isn’t always expressed among our people, yet it lingers in the background, and cuts to the core of our identity in the 21st Century. Who are we? What is our message? Are we still specialists, destined to share a peculiar message?

I think the answer to that question is YES. We are still specialists. The three angel’s messages haven’t changed. We’re still called to share the same message as we always were. But where we once relegated Jesus to the fringes of the everlasting gospel, we must now, more than ever, enthrone Him atop everything we teach. Will you share the idea of Sabbath with your mates? Then show how it enhances your connection with Jesus and your family. Will you tell people about prophecy? Share how it reminds you that Jesus knows everything, and that your future is secure in Him. Will you talk about the sanctuary message in your small group? Celebrate the fact that it assures you of your everlasting, unconditional friendship with your Best Mate andFriend.

If you’re a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, you’ve got the privilege of living in a time when people are thirsty for meaningful relationships with people they can trust. When we create that for them, do life together, and point them to the ultimate Friend and truth-teller, people find what they’ve been looking for. This is Adventism. This is Christianity.
