The long awaited day was finally there. And it rained. What was the meaning of rain - we had prayed to God to have good weather, so many children and their parents would come to Dandenong Polish SDA on the 25th of October. And by 9 o'clock - it stopped, and after a while the sun came out. We knew we were blessed, in many ways.
Over 600 children and their parents came, to enjoy so many things. When asked, people had a hard time naming a favorite, because so many activities were great fun and especially geared to children.
When asked what they enjoyed most, a family said: "Everything was great!"
There was hardly a child in the area without a face painting of some kind, whether a butterfly or a spiderman, or maybe a ferocious tiger, together with all the balloons they all added to the color of the day. Another thrilling experience was the reptile show, where kids could look at the snakes, lizards and a small croc in their terrariums, and also touch some of the smooth-skinned snakes being showed by the handlers. It was a chance to learn something about the fantastic creatures that are out there in our Australian nature. The ones who were a bit cold in the morning, could go inside to watch a Bible film, or to enjoy the many crafts available in the dining room - it was amazing what beautiful things the children did with play-doh, paints and glitter, with experienced teachers to help them. The Pinnacle of Terror had many children climbing in their harness, and squealing with excitement when they rappelled down the side. A few were afraid, but it was so special to see the pride on their faces after they had successfully managed the challenge.
The jumping castle had kids of all ages happily bouncing like little kangaroos, with bigger kids helping smaller ones. The soccer court was set up in the afternoon, and lots of children were both playing and watching - at the end of the day, the young adults and youth took their turn with much laughter and wild shots.
Occasionally the happy murmur of the area was interrupted by singing at the stage - we were treated to several ABBA renditions by the kids singing karaoke, as well as familiar favorites like Hokey Pokey or Itsy Bitsy Spider.
Food always plays a big part in any gathering of people, and the Dandenong church did a fantastic job in making sure no one was hungry. Breakfast was served from 9 o'clock, with cereals from Sanitarium, warm, fluffy pancakes with syrup, tea and juice, as well as yoghurts from Paul's milk. Children had the opportunity to dive into tubs of lollies in between meals. And come lunchtime, we all enjoyed hotdogs, with a gracious variety offered; vegetarian, chicken and beef halal dogs.
Two things stand out from the day - the marvelous way the many people of the Dandenong church were working tirelessly, giving of their time, energy, and in many cases also money, to make this day possible. The other is the many happy faces of the children. After all, that is why we did the Kid's Fun day - to see all those children enjoy a day just for them!
